BAD Experience
Bought it in full confidence of Magellan. The error message (after looking for nearly any address) says "system needs to be restarted for better performance. wait while your information is being saved" Constantly annoying and unless you save every address in your address book, it will keep giving you the error. I am sure you will see a Magellan flying out the window on the 10 fwy someday. It was mine.

Great entry level GPS but lacking some functions
I received the 1470 and gave it a thorough but fair test (600 mile road trip) this past weekend. It performed all advertised functions as described well. The large screen is easy to use and the directions are accurate and informative and easy to follow. It got me to where I was wanting to in a very expeditious manner-both the fastest route and least freeways! I was impressed. (I also purchased the traffic alert but was never in a covered area so no comments on it.)
With this being an entry level GPS, there are several things that prevent me from keeping the unit (am returning it to Amazon)that is available on other comparable systems. First, I cannot pre-plan a route by setting up an itinerary at home and save it on the GPS. Additionally, it will not allow me to select a point on the map as a "go-to" or input GPS co-ordinates as go to points. (These features are available on other comparable units such as TomTom.)
Since I use the unit primarily for road trips to obsecure places (such as along Route 66 or Great River Road) it does not fit my own personal needs.
If you are wanting a device with outstanding screen size and audio with very basic features such as going to one particular place at a time, this is the ideal GPS for you.

Magellan RoadMate 1470 vs. Maestro 3250
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RHBJQF6F7WBDI I also own the Magellan Maestro 3250 3.5" and I wrote a review for it back in 2008; it's like Magellan read my review or listened to other customers having similar thoughts because they addressed several of the main cons that I really wish it had. Then again, it could be because Mitac (Mio) bought Magellan. Mio makes excellent GPS devices too. I also own two Mio GPS devices (c310x and C520) and I still love Mio GPS because it's fast and loaded with features.
* Immediately, I noticed they added an entire overview of the route that you'll be taking to fit the entire screen. (this is a must for any GPS! However, the only time you can do this is when you first select a destination!)
* When clicking on a road in the iternary, now it will actually show that road on the actual map, as well as the ability to avoid the maneuver (the red arrow to the far right).
I think it's also cool how it can show all of the calculated routes on one screen (however, it's only before you actually calculate the destination).
Fastest Time - Red path
Shortest Distance - Yellow path
Most Use of Freeways - Green path
Least Use of Freeways - Pink path
(It would have been cooler to have an option to keep all those alternate color routes still displayed, no matter what route you choose, while driving too.)
* They also added a quick 3D/2D map display mode button right on the map, when you touch the map, without having to go through the cumbersome menu options like before.
* The ON button is a slide on type and is much easier to turn on now. With the Maestro 3250, you had to hold on the button for quite awhile.
I still don't really understand Magellan's "multi-destination routing". It optimizes the order of the trip, which is good, but it's just basically a trip planner list that calculates one destination at a time after you reach one. I wish it would actually calculate everything so that you'll see multiple "destination finish line" flags (ie: highlights on the map of all the destinations).
Pros:
- The size: 4.7" the screen is huge, yet very slim to easily fit in a pocket!
- Very clean design/interface.
- HIGHWAY LANE ASSIST is just awesome and EXTREMELY helpful. This alone is worth the upgrade and all GPS should have this feature.
- You have the lane assist, it warns you several miles, and it even notifies you when to actually do the maneuver; you're pretty well covered here!
- Find Parking Icon (I love this! Right after I got to my destination, it gave me an quick option to look for parking in LA - It can be a nightmare finding a close parking in the city)
- Displays the estimated time and option to see the itinerary for all the route options (fastest time, shortest distance, etc.)
- QuickSpell (I can just type "L" and it will automatically guess as Los Angeles)
- Large speakers
- As always, you get the AAA Tourbook and Roadside Assistance.
- Have four quick OneTouch shortcuts
- P.O.I search seems to be quicker.
- Text-to-Speech (announces street names) and also tells you which side of the street the location is at.
Cons:
- Can't add new P.O.I (Why?! You can save addresses but it will just pile up in your address book)
- No sleep mode. (it takes about 33 seconds to boot up each time)
- Can't delete individual previous destination (only the ability to delete the entire history)
I still wish it had more camera options instead of just 2D/3D; I wish it would have a quick skyview showing major highways, etc. without having to zoom out manually. When in multiple destination, the "add destination" should have an option to select a point on the map instead of taking you to the enter address/search P.O.I. I wish it had a feature to search for highway entrance (nearest current position) without looking for it on the map manually.
Like in Google maps, I'd be nice one day to have that ability in GPS too to be able to just drag certain roads to make the route exactly the way YOU want it. Because sometimes I don't like the way it calculates the route, so I would just have to select "avoid maneuver" and hope that it uses the right alternate road.
Overall, this is an excellent GPS and I would definitely recommend. I really love the screen size (4.7" to a 4.3" is a noticeable difference) and the highway lane assist is definitely worth having. That alone is worth the upgrade if you're like me and get worried if you'll miss an interchange, etc.
However, I still find the Mio C520, overall, to have more features and benefits in my taste. If you're intimidated with too many features, the Mio is probably not for you. If you're new to GPS, I'd recommend this GPS more; it's more than enough features for the average user and the interface is just very clean.
I also recommend getting Bracketron UFM-100BL Nav-Mat GPS Friction Dash Pad, especially if your State doesn't allow putting it on your windshield other than the corner. I still recommend getting it because you don't want to leave suction cup marks on your windshield.

Once the satellite is acquired the product performs well. I think three to five minutes to find a satellite is much to long. One can get lost in that amount of time.

Shame on Magellan
We purchased the Roadmate 1470 days before our month long roadtrip. Day two into the trip the unit began to fail with a message stating it needed to shut down. This rendered the GPS totally useless for our trip. When I called Magellan from the road they suggested I download a software update which should fix the problem. We did the download and still the unit was not working and the message and automatic shutdown continued. Magellan was obviously aware of the problem as they made mention of it on their website - too bad they couldn't have recalled it before letting people purchase it in good faith as we did. They have asked us to return the unit and presumably they will replace it. Frankly, I'd rather have a refund as we bought it specifically for the trip. I would not recommend Magellan at this time.
